Back to the dry cleaner
I enjoy a nice, crisp, white dress shirt as much as the next guy I guess. I don’t really think about them much other than when I immediately get a stain or mark on them before even getting to work.
That happened to me this morning thanks to the damn rubber gaskets on the subway doors.
Of course, it was all because of a damn baby stroller. I have railed and railed against open baby strollers on the train before, and many of you have said I am being to hard.
Well, first let’s just get the facts straight. The MTA says that strollers are supposed to be folded up and closed when riding the train.
Anyway, the train was somewhat crowded this morning. We came to a stop, and this mother started to get off the train. She got a bit of a late start in her move for the for the door. I was standing near the door, so I took a step out half way onto the platform. I was blocking the door open so she could get off with the stroller.
Just as she got clear of the doors, they started to close. Right into my back.
For the rest of the day, I had a very straight, very neat black line down the left side of my back.

Wow…that sucks.

You’re a good man;)
ReplySubways are a big part of NYC culture, but many have concerns about their reliability and costs, especially with upcoming transportation initiatives. Are these changes beneficial or detrimental to the subway system? What improvements would you make, where would you start? ReplyI wouldn’t go on these dirty trains with anything nice, crisp & white on.
Replyooooh! that definitely is a mess! The crowds are one of the biggest reason I prefer to use a personal vehicle – you never know what will happen!
ReplyI would have just burned the shirt afterward. How many years of gunk has been built up on those rubber strips? Eww!
ReplyThis has happened to me 2 times when going to job interviews. Especially in morning rush hour when no cares who they push to get where they want to go. Go through all the expense and BS of dry cleaning and looking good, and then you show up looking like a bum. Sucks.
Replyit is difficult to keep clean shirt, especially in this world where it is a river of people
ReplyYou were just askin for trouble man! Morning times are a nightmare on those trains. Too many people, dirty environment, and you wanting to stay looking presentable…that’s a recipe for disaster if you ask me
ReplyBy the time I leave my house my white dress shirt is wrinkled. And don’t even get me started on what the seat belt does to it. Maybe I need the heavy, heavy starch
ReplyIt was the baby in the stroller I saw it- he had a black marker pen- our beloved Subways are crystal clean and you can eat off the floor?
Replyyou helped out someone its great..
Replyits really difficult to keep ur shirt neat and clean whole day….or like if you are in train or in crowd …it is really hard To save your dress …or in morning like its too much rushhyy ..so you cant help it…
Rrr…That’s the kind of thing that would happen to me. I used to keep a backup change of clothes at the office in a closet just in case something like that happened! I also kept a Norelco shaver in my desk to prevent 5 o’clock shadows if i had a late-afternoon meeting!
ReplyHaha – I love your humorous posts! It reminds me of books by Bukowski – great writer. Anyway – theres nothing worse than getting a dark stain on a newly white shirt…been there dont that a thousand times. At least a bird didnt do its business on your shoulder – that happened to me about 3 weeks back….very embarrasing.
ReplyI guess it was a reminded you all day that you did something good. I would have love to have you hold the door for me as I fell through the train door and down the steps when I was pushing my stroller. Thanks for the story.
ReplyDo people really use dry cleaners? Must be 20 years since I did. I may iron once a month, but thats about it. Of course I am casual at work. On strollers, I think we just have to appreciate that they help protect the kids and move on.
ReplyAnyone taking the mothers side in all this noise? I have an 18-month old baby and it’s not always easy juggling the stroller with the babe in arms..
ReplySorry about the shirt, but is was a nice thing to do for the mom who was probably not having a great morning herself.
ReplyIts not easy being a mother but it also sucks when you get slammed in the subway doors. Its happened to me and it reallly hurts!
Replywow that gotta suck. I hope you get better days
ReplyFlipping doors, they need to sense these things.
ReplyWow…that sucks.
ReplyI love a nice creased dress shirt that is not wrinkled at all. Going out to dinner you will be sharp.
ReplyThat seemed to be a tough incident, wasn’t it? If I were the one who wears that shirt that same day I got into the train, I would not have let anything get near with my shirt. But for you, that was a wonderful thing you did! You helped somebody got off the train who was obviously carrying something with her. You really helped her a lot! That’s so kind of you though you got your shirt dirt up by the door..

I am really for you and your shirt, the door got it untidy for that whole day. But still, you made a good thing for other people. Thanks for sharing and I enjoyed reading your post!
ReplyBasic question.. why do the doors have grease on them? We have subway trains here.. and I have had my share of luck getting stuck in them..
but no mark ever..
ReplyI love these comments
