Turnstile Swipes Messed Up?

Posted on March 22nd, 2010 by The SUBWAYblogger in Transit Failures

Is anyone else having a real bitch of a time with the turnstiles the last few days?  I feel like a complete moron.

It all culminated with today when I swiped so much that I lost my fare.

I’m hoping that the guy in charge of cleaning the MetroCard slots is on vacation or something.  At my home stop, I have yet to swipe through on the first shot since last Tuesday.

I figured it was my card.  Luckily, my card ran out on Thursday night, so I got a brand new one Friday morning.  Same damn problem.

Today I nearly lost my mind.  I swiped about 10 times, then out of nowhere the turnstile said that my card was “just used.” Yet, I still couldn’t push though.

I had to go to the damn booth and get them to let me in.

Subway maintenance cuts must be getting underway.  Lovely.

I understand how irritating it can be. I have faced similar issues with some ATMs at my place. Its frustrating.

71st Ave on Monday it took each person before 6 swipes. For me just the 1. Not sure what that's about.

Any type of machine like that can be really annoying… once an ATM, that didn't have enough cash for some reason, took twice money from my CC and returned 0. I had to complain at the bank of course…

This has happened to me, but usually when it says “swipe again at this turnstile.” You can ask the clerk in the booth to fix it, if 1) there is a clerk and 2) you had no additional money on your card, otherwise, how would you know that it had taken the money in the first place. I suspect this happens often and people just do not know it is happening, and no, it is not acceptable even at a minor error rate, as what is a minor problem for the MTA costs people real money. I bet the MTA would not tell you an occasional turnstile jumpis ok.

THEY WILL GET WORSE AS THE TA WILL LAY OFF AAS MANY PEOPLE AS THEY CAN, THEY ARE REMOVING EYES AND EARS FROM THE SUBWAYS. CRIME WILL INCREASE BECAUSE THE CRIMINALS WILL KNOW WHERE THERE ARE THE LEAST AMOUNT OF EYES TO WATCH THEY DO THERE DEEDS

More than one-quarter of all subway MetroCard swipes have failed since the MTA kicked off its fare-card program, according to a report by the city Public Advocate's Office.

The trick here is that if you keep swiping the card on the same turnstile it will work as long as you are swiping slower with each time. Dont go to the next turnstile as it will automatically take your fare again.
