Hope all is well! I really appreciated you blogging about Dunkin’s MetroCard promotion last month, and wanted to let you and your readers know about another program where Dunkin’ is making the morning commute a little brighter for New Yorkers during these tough times.

On February 10th and 12th, Dunkin’ Donuts “Latte spies” will roam the New York metro area handing out loaded $5.00 gift cards to anyone they see holding a Dunkin’ Donuts bag or cup on their morning commute. Four lucky commuters will also receive $99 gift cards.

These giveaways are a component of Dunkin’s newly launched promotion where all stores in the tri-state area are now offering Lattes for only 99-cents, reinforcing that customers can still indulge in a high-quality beverage without blowing the lids off their budgets.

The “Latte spies” will travel on foot, as well as the LIRR, Subway, NJT and Hoboken Ferry in search of loyal customers at these locations:

Hicksville, Long Island and Penn Station/Herald Square (Tuesday, February 10th)
Iselin, Secaucus and Hoboken, NJ and NYC (Thursday, February 12th)

Now I’m just saying…SUBWAYblogger is a regular Dunkin’ Donuts coffee drinker.  By regular I mean DAILY.  I many not get spotted by a Latte Spy.  Sooooo I’m just saying…HINT HINT.  Wink Wink.  Wouldn’t kill them to send some of those cards my way.

However, walk your naked ass into the middle of a super crowded train car, and you’d have some issues.  The last thing any New Yorker would allow is some naked dude rubbing up against them.

This is the stuff that drives us all insane.  Swipe your damn card, then walk through.  No green light, no go.  That simple.

If you’re too slow to figure it out, then you’re a hazard and shouldn’t be on the train.

Granted, it doesn’t go everywhere like the NYC subway does.  And you have to pay based on how far you ride.  Otherwise, the Metro is beautiful.

Just look in this video at things like the platform that lights up and blinks when a train is arriving.  The clean stations.  The clean trains.

I’m just saying.  We should demand better for New York.

The Kia Motors and NBA Tip Off Celebration Event in Union Square is this week.  They’re setting up a basketball court, have a DJ, yadda yadda.  There will be current and former players there too apparently.

It’s all coming up on October 28th.

A publicist for the event says, “To say the least, it-is-going-to-be-insane.”

Perhaps.

Kia paying for this kind of publicity is definitely insane, that’s for sure.

Some people are on a whole different level, though.

Kinda cool, right?  Somehow this cam was mounted on the front of a 7 train or just inside a front window.

But then notice that it’s something like 48 minutes long.  Wow.  That’s dedication.  Scary, but dedicated.

We took the three of them and strung them together.  They show unattended bags, with no voiceover.  Then shows the tip line phone number.  That’s it.  For some reason, the sound didn’t work when I put them together.  Just imagine the sounds of the subway.

So yeah.  I’m hoping they had interns make these, and didn’t actually pay anyone to make them.  What a joke.

It is a rough day when those escalators break down.

A guy who does a dead on impression of the “subway door closing” tone.  (Just when you thought you’ve seen it all.)

Who’s the best Subway musician?  Guess we’ll find out tomorrow at 8pm when the finalists perform again.

Kind of funny that this show might launch someone’s career out of the subway.  Like they would ever go back to playing on the platform after this…haha.

I didn’t stick around long.

Shockingly, the subway was not at all busy.  This morning, I asked a transit cop if the entrances would be closed.  He said yes, but they were all open when I got there.

I didn’t stick around for Usher’s performance, so maybe it got more crowded then.  Overall, wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be.

Fifteen sets of twins, dressed identically, boarded a train and sat directly across from each other.  They mimicked each other’s every move.  They then waited for people on the train to notice the real life human mirror, then taped their reactions.

Pretty funny.  That would be pretty freaky to see in person.  I would probably have stood there for five minutes or more before realizing it.  The whole time though knowing that “something is strange here…but I can’t quite put my finger in it.”

He has a synthesiser on his violin or something that makes it sound sort of like an electric guitar.  So it’s like a hard rock hairband with a fiddle.

Axl would be so proud.

Ok, we promise no more subway music for a while.

Now, NPR is taking the idea in another direction.  They chose their favorite four musicians (out of 50) and posted clips on their site.  Now, they want you to go vote for your favorite.  The mini contest is part of the Bryant Park Project.

Go check them out and vote.  Maybe you’ll see them sometime during your commute this summer.

It is a very well produced story or mini documentary about a musician auditioning for Music Under New York, a program that funds and supports subway musicians.  Personally, I think it would have been in the MTA’s best interest to give SUBWAYblogger a shout about the auditions for a little publicity, but that’s just me.

The program itself has been around for a few years now and has grown to receive over 50 auditions, held in Grand Central Terminal.

The flacid bear gets attached to a subway grate. The flow of air passing up from below as the train goes by inflates the bear to full, four-legged stance.

Let me sum up what you’re seeing. You stand on the musty platform waiting forever for your train to arrive. It finally does, and maybe you’re lucky enough to get on.

A few stops later, you find out over the PA that you’re train is going to go express or bypass stops. Not just one or two stops, but something like 50 stops. So then you get off on an already crowded platform to wait for the train that is allegedly right behind your current train. Above is what you see.

Also, in case you didn’t notice, SUBWAYblogger got a small digital video camera. So now, none of you are safe!

If they were to ridged, they would literally snap when rolled over. So they need to bend somewhat.

Well, the tracks at one of my subway stop bend a LOT! The bend down easily 6 or 8 inches when the train passes. The whole track dips including the wooden stretchers. The tracks are laid over gravel stones instead of concrete, so there’s space under neath them.

Then the train comes, they bend. There’s also a rail joint at that same spot. So when the train goes by and hits the joint, there’s a very loud bang.

I tried to get this video to show it. You can somewhat see the rail move if you look closely. In person, you can really see it.
