Last month, we told you about Dunkin’ Donuts plan to hand out free Metrocards around New York City. Now, DD tells SUBWAYblogger that they plan to hand out gift cards to rail riders! Some may even get $99 gift cards.
Here’s the details:
Hope all is well! I really appreciated you blogging about Dunkin’s MetroCard promotion last month, and wanted to let you and your readers know about another program where Dunkin’ is making the morning commute a little brighter for New Yorkers during these tough times.
On February 10th and 12th, Dunkin’ Donuts “Latte spies” will roam the New York metro area handing out loaded $5.00 gift cards to anyone they see holding a Dunkin’ Donuts bag or cup on their morning commute. Four lucky commuters will also receive $99 gift cards.
These giveaways are a component of Dunkin’s newly launched promotion where all stores in the tri-state area are now offering Lattes for only 99-cents, reinforcing that customers can still indulge in a high-quality beverage without blowing the lids off their budgets.
The “Latte spies” will travel on foot, as well as the LIRR, Subway, NJT and Hoboken Ferry in search of loyal customers at these locations:
Hicksville, Long Island and Penn Station/Herald Square (Tuesday, February 10th)
Iselin, Secaucus and Hoboken, NJ and NYC (Thursday, February 12th)
Now I’m just saying…SUBWAYblogger is a regular Dunkin’ Donuts coffee drinker. By regular I mean DAILY. I many not get spotted by a Latte Spy. Sooooo I’m just saying…HINT HINT. Wink Wink. Wouldn’t kill them to send some of those cards my way.
It took me nearly 15 minutes to get a new Metrocard today. What a freaking cluster f*ck.
I happen to be at a station that is under construction, so it only has two machines at this entrance. Of course, there’s always a line because there’s only the two machines.
So I got in line. Once I finally got to the front of the line, I’ll bet you can guess what happened. No credit cards.
For whatever reason, the credit card reader wasn’t able to read my card. At first I thought it was just me.
So I got back into line for the second machine. From there, I saw that other people were having the same issue I did with my original machine. So I had to wait in line all overagain.
You know, I really need to get involved with TransitChex or something. I’m getting pretty sick of this crap.
Have you played Subway Shuffle for iPhone/iTouch? It’s pretty damn addictive.
It’s sort of Rubik’s cube like. Maybe not. It’s sort of hard to describe, but I will try.
Basically, you have to move your “train” from one end of the puzzle board to the destination. Along the way, you can only travel on your own line (color). Meanwhile, there are other trains in front of you that must be moved out of the way for you to pass.
So on each board, it gets more and more tricky. Eventually, you have to start thinking multiple moves ahead of time. More about Subway Shuffle >>

Lord knows the haters start bashing away in the comments every time I bring up the subject.
So before I get into the point of this post, let me say a few things for the record
- No, I don’t hate fat people. I just think that they need to recognize that they are fat and that other people shouldn’t have to be impacted by someone else’s girth.
- I’m not insensitive. I just tell it the way it is. Sugar coating is for babies.
- I know…just because your fat doesn’t mean you a bad person. I get it, and I agree. So just relax.

There’s a new geeky duo that claim the title of being the fastest to ride the entire New York City Subway system. Back in December of 2006, some guys broke the old record by an hour.
The new record holders claim to have beaten the record by a couple of hours. How did they do it? Math.
Chris Solarz and Matt Ferrisi are a pair of computer/financial geeks that used computer models to calculate the best plan of attack. They entered in all of the relevant data, including number of stops, lines, train schedules, distances, etc. Their program then did the trillions of riding combinations to produce the one that would yeild the fastest ride.
Apparently it all worked, because they smashed the old record without really breaking a sweat. From the beginning, they started gaining time, finding themselves ahead of schedule.
This time, they are going to have to report their record to the Guinness Book with documentation. The last record breaking caught a lot of media attention, and the attention of Guinness officials. So when the previous record was broken, it was certified very quickly.
Along the way, the men had to get witness signatures and take plenty of photos to document the trip. All of the documentation then gets turned in. So as of now, they are the unofficial record holders.
The previous team did a far better job of publicizing their record breaking attempt (including sending info to SUBWAYblogger). This crew flew under the radar for the most part. Their attempt did get some mainstream coverge though.
It’s been a busy few days for SUBWAYblogger. Thankfully, I can refocus here now and stop neglecting the site!
In other news, did anyone attempt to go to Times Square to watch the Inaugaration yesterday? If you did, you were probably pretty pissed.
There were thousands that turned out to watch, but from what I’ve heard, there was no sound! You could see it all happening on the jumbo screens, but no one thought to set up speakers to hear anything. Oops.
We’ve been getting lots of comments on our Bar Car idea. I still think it would be an excellent idea, but apparently most other people are afraid of the devil beer.
Alright. I admit it. I had to ask for directions today on the subway. I’m not terribly proud of it either.
We had company in town this weekend, and went downtown to the Seaport, etc. We were going to take the 2,3 down, but that got all messed up because uptown, the trains stopped running for n reason.
So we transferred to the A. Got to West 4th and it switched over to the 6th Avenue line with no warning. Had to backtrack on that one.
I tried to ask a transit worker what my alternatives were. I walked away before I said some choice words about the worker’s lack of mastery of the English language.
Eventually, we did make it over to the World Trade Center instead. Then we just walked from there.
Now I know why I don’t go downtown on the weekend.
That’s what I would like to suggest as a new revenue stream at the MTA hearings. It would be nice to go and get a quick coldie while on the train.
Or maybe on the platforms. You could install bars on the platforms. Just get rid of some of the magazine stands and convert them to beer stands. I think it would be awesome.
I for one would buy one every day, especially in the summer.
Then maybe you add some coffee stands (nice, clean coffee stands). That would be killer in the morning.
I guess in general, I’m looking for concessions on my ride.
