So here’s a question…what’s the dirtiest station in the subway system? Every regular rider knows a stop that just makes their skin crawl to think about it.
One I can think of is 96th and Broadway on the 1, 2, and 3. That stop is old and disgusting. It fills up like a toilet any time there is a good rain.
59th Street Columbus Circle used to not be too bad until they started destroying everything to remove the asbestos.
Most parts of the Grand Central subway are gross too. Mostly the main concourse. It just smells like homeless feet and ass. It looks pretty run down too. However, branches off of it like the walk to the S train are in fairly good shape.

They’re completely renovating and upgrading 59th St-Columbus Circle on both the ABCD and 1 platforms.

To get to the REALLY scary stuff you have to head out towards the ends of the lines, especially in the Bronx and Queens.

In Manhattan, the dirtiest is the 2nd Ave. stop on the F/V. It always smells and seems to have a few permanent residents.
But the stops out in Brooklyn and Queens put Manhattan’s stops to shame.

The worst and most RANK part of the system has to be the underpass between the downtown 6 and the uptown 6 / E / V at 51st & Lex.
That underpass makes me vomit.

I agree with Vinny. What IS that smell?? I look around, but I don’t see anything. You’d think that a smell that bad would have a large obvious source…

A few years ago, they had a sewer leakage (or was it sewage leakage?) into that underpass right after they patched it up and put the new tile down there with the artsy mural.
I wonder how much crap-infested water is still soaked into the walls surrounding it because I still smell it and it has never gotten better.
You have to wonder if the MTA ever actually goes to these stations, and if they do do they just go “Yep… Fine here… Nothing we can do!”

The Broadway stop on the G has stalagtites, and a stream os liquid that never stops. A couple of years ago Channel 7 did a spot on it and it is worsse today.

The 7th ave subway station along the B D E line is one of the dirtiest subways, it has both permanent residents (the ones with the carriages AND boxes taking up most the bench) and stalagmites.

The 1,2,3 at 14th Street. The rats come within inches of you. And in the vendor’s stand up the stairs from the platform, baby rats openly play in the magazine racks. Yum. Makes you think twice about buying anything from there.

Well, i used to think that it was Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall, because of the garbage lying around on the tracks and the fowl smell, but now im considering Jay St. Boro Hall, because i notice the same thing there as well. But its a head 2 head thing. (Oh, just for the record, 42nd Street Grand Central is actually the best.)

Has nobody been in the Chambers St. stop on the J? That has to be the scummiest and most decrepit station I’ve seen. The 23rd St. stop on the F/V also seems to have the worst rat problem. I can’t imagine how many of them are scurrying around in the walls and the drainage pipes there.

It’s sad because the 7th Ave & 53rd station was renovated not too long ago but it is not maintained. All the paint is peeling and there has to be over 100 water leaks. Every column is covered in mold. This station is disgusting.

So no one has been to 168th & bway on the 1? Although having the potential of being grand, w/ its very high arches and tall cielings, the station is dimly lit, infested w/ roaches and homeless, and not to mention the death elevators which can reach upwards of 120 degrees.

my choice is the hoyt schermerhorn station on the A C AND G LINES. THE LIGHTING IS ALSO AWFUL.BUT THE SMITH-NINTH STREET STATION ON THE F AND G LINE IS DIRTY TOO.OH YES JAY STREET AND BOROUGH HALL TOO.

It’s true, all the underground stops mentioned are horrific, especially 168th and Broadway on the Number 1. I got off there by mistake at 2:00AM (about 15 years ago), and all the lights were out… there were at least 50 homeless people hitting crack pipes, and what space they didn’t occupy was crawling with rats. It’s much improved since then.
But my stop, Bay 50th Street on the D in Brooklyn, has pigeon shit that’s inches deep in places.

The most neglected of all stations has to be the Chambers Street station on the JMZ line. I used to go there every evening when I was working on 34th Street. Hard to believe that station is right under City Hall (and this in post-Giuliani NYC).

168th Street Station in NYC is the DIRTIEST FILTHIEST TRAIN STATION in NYC… I agree with the above comment … between the piss, cockroaches and rats… I mean u walk in there and feel like you’re gonna come out with fleas or psoriasis

59th and Lexington. 4 and 5 train stop deep underground. Entire ceiling above long escalator covered in black mold. Mold smell is overpowering

I have seen and smelled WORSE than the 168 train station. First to say that i have never seen cockroaches in the 23 years that I’ve been traveling in and out of that train station. For the fact that you say that someone might end up with fleas or psoriasis you must not be able to endure much. If you think that’s dirty i guess you’ll never survive in Brooklyn or any third world country. As an advice don’t go anywhere outside the U.S. if you can’t endure the smell of pee, homeless people, cockroaches, the sight of rats (that are in mostly EVERY TRAIN STATION!) .

Well i think that the dirtiest train station in New York City would be the one that has a puddle of vomit. With a stench of pee and crap. While the air is thin and humid. With homeless beings sleeping on the seats. Rats running back and forth of a crack under a door or an area near the steps. With stains on the wall and graffiti everywhere. That’s the Dirtiest Train Station that would be out there. All you would have to do is name it.
