NYC Counter Terrorism Chief Wants Better Subway Security

 police2.jpg

What’s Richard Falkenrath’s, NYC Chief Counter Terrorism Chief, biggest fear?  Simultaneous detonation of backpack bombs in the subway system.

Falkenrath says he “wakes up every morning braced for another terrorist attack…”  Falkenrath warned House lawmakers in Washington about the lack of subway security.

Despite those threatsand a spate of deadly train bombings in London, Madrid and Mumbai, India, Falkenrath, a former White House homeland security official, said the federal government has done little to protect the nation’s subway and rail systems.

Lovely.  It gets better.

“Given the severity of the terrorist threat to the U.S. mass transit system … the disparity between the federal investment in aviation security and … mass transit security is a national embarrassment,” he said.

Quick side note about Falkenrath.  He’s a former Bush White House staffer.  Officially, he was Director for Proliferation Strategy on the National Security Council staff.  The fact that he worked for Bush is a bit scary.  But then again, he left to come work for the city, so maybe that means he’s actually smart.  Anyway…

At the hearing, Falkenrath was testifying before the Homeland Security Committee about a $4 billion bill proposed to provide security funding for the subway.  However, even if it is approved, there’s tons of problems.

One of the biggest problems is that the money pays for equipment, but not for the people!  So even if they get the money, they can’t use it to pay for more staffing.  Wonderful.

That’s how screwed up our government actually is.

It’s not a lot of snow, but you can still break your ass

steps.jpg

A light dusting of snow this morning might look like nothing to be concerned with, but you (and I) would be dead wrong.

As soon as that light dusting of snow comes into contact with the freezing cold metal plate on the top of the subway stairs, there is an instant Slip n’ Slide created.

I almost took a dive down the stairs this morning.  Luckily I slowed my walk down just enough before getting there.  Walking on the side walk, there was a light coating of snow, but it was by no means slippery.  Slick metal stairs though…that’s another ball game.

Who’s idea was it to make the subway stairs out of steal?  It’s not even like it’s textured steal either.  It has diamond pattern cut into the stairs like grooves, but that definitely doesn’t provide any traction.

There should be something with more grit on the stairs.  Right now, most stair cases have been so worn out.  Actually, not so much worn as polished.  The steel actually is polished to a smooth shine.  They still have the carved grooves, but the elevated parts (where the foot meets the surface) are slick.

This might be my last ride

This is just a disclaimer…

If SUBWAYblogger wins Mega Millions tonight, we won’t be riding the subway anymore.

Sure, we love the subway and always will. However, LIMOblogger has a nice ring to it!

It’s so windy!

How windy is it?

It sounds like a jumbo jet is going to land on the roof of the subway ceiling.

All along the tracks are big vent shafts to exhange air with the outside. When the wind blows over them, is creates a really low rumble sound. I’ve never heard it before today.

You can tell it is the wind because little leaves and small debris fall through the holes like snow everytime the wind blows or a train goes by.

This must be mildly similar to what a tornado sounds like.

Welcome back winter. It’ freezing cold all over again. And what the hell was that this afternoon? Was that a snow squal?

It is definately cold all over again. Stupidly, I did not wear an especially warm coat today. So, I like many other riders had a quickness in my step. The subway entrance was a warm oasis.

Smelly, but warm.

No “A” Train. Or maybe yes? Hmmm

For one reason or another, there is a problem on the A line this morning.  Trains are being rerouted all over the place.

At this point, all I know is that the A train I was hoping to get at Penn Station is supposed to not be here.  Ok fine.  So I head back down the stairs, walk all the way under, then back up to catch the C train instead.

What’s that across the way on the other platform??  Looks like an A train!!  But according to the lady yelling at me in the ceiling, there isn’t supposed to be an A train here.  Oh well, I’ll just wait for the “C.”

And wait….

and wait some more…

still waiting…

WTF?  Is that another A train?  Yes, yes it is.  There my dumb ass stands, still waiting on the C platform.

My fellow passengers are equally as pissed.
