Broken Subway Door?

Posted on June 15th, 2009 by The SUBWAYblogger in Transit Failures

It’s a good thing I snagged a seat today, or it would have been a pretty crappy way to start my morning.

At 28th Street, my train was stuck in the station because of a door problem. Perhaps some of the motormen that read this blog can chime in on what can cause this.

Clearly it was not something that was going to raise a red flag on this insanely crowded train because they managed to get it fixed after about 15 minutes of waiting.

I was about 3 train car lenghts away from the door that had the issue, so I could see them trying to fix it.  It consisted of one guy hitting the door close button over and over again while the other physically pushed the doors together with his hands.

From what I could see, the doors were closing just fine on their own.  I’m not sure what pushing the doors together by hand was adding to the equation.  I guess he was just trying to get the sensor to engage or something.  If you stepped back and looked, you would have no idea something was wrong with the door because it closed all the way by itself.

After the threee stooges finished slamming the doors together over and over again, we got back on our way.  Of course, we were so far behind that we immdediately had to start skipping stops to get caught up.

A frustrating way to start your Monday.

At least they let everyone remain on the train while they fixed the door. The “3 stooges” must have been close by to that station so that is why the passengers were not thrown off. Usually they would just take that train out of service and send it to the yard to get fixed.

Where can I get a list of all the Manhattan subway stations that have either an escalator or elevator. I will be visiting New York and need to know where I won’t have to walk steps.

    Thank you,

Wow…it is pretty weird with how I came across this blog post. Just today, I was stuck on a crowded train in Chicago for a little over an hour. It was the most frustrating moment of my life….because I was standing up the whole time. Should I start driving my car to work now?

Of course not! I’m saving way more money on the train.

Anyways….I thought it was very interesting that I found this post especially after what happened today.

And you really have no way to tell if these guys actually were doing their work well, or could just as easily have been replaced by a barrelfull of monkeys. Maybe that really is the best way to fix a broken subway door?

That’s truly frustrating. I once met with a “stupid” family on the metro. They were all trying to pose for a pictures and whatnot while the bus was moving at high speed. They were rocked around and bumped into innocent bystanders including myself.

How annoying, I feel your pain.
