It’s official, 7 train riders can come get drunk with the rest of us!

Yes, that’s right.  Stranded weekend 7 train riders in the outer boroughs can come celebrate St. Patrick’s Daywith the rest of us in Manhattan.  The MTA has decided to officially resume weekend 7 train service just for the holiday weekend.

See the MTA’s 7 Train Service Page.  It’s tiny, but it says that service will be normal March 17-19.

And in completely unrelated news, this might be the grossest thing I’ve ever seen.  Thanks to AMNY Tracker for this…

Semi-back on Track (no pun intended…ok maybe)

Well the system seems semi back to normal. There’s still a long wait between trains.

I got a text message from a friend on the Lexington line saying that the trains are coming in groups. 2 or 3 trains would come by back to back with virtually no wait. Then it would be forever until the next group would come.

I had to wait for the first train to go by. It was too full. The next one took forever to come. By then, the platform filled back up. Luckily, I was up to the front edge of the platform.

We just left an express station that was overflowing with people. Lot of riders are trying to make the transfer, but wind up stranded on the platform.

Looks like it might take 24 hours for everything to settle back down.

Schizo Subway Bomber Gets 5 Years

A schizophrenic Staten Island man, James Elshafay, has been sentenced to five years in prison for conspiring to blow up the Herald Square subway station.  Elshafay plead guilty and also testified agains Shahawar Matin Siraj, the mastermind of the plot.

Siraj was sentenced last year to 30 years in prison.

More Details.

Schizophrenic or not, neither one of them should ever be allowed out of prison again.  I think many straphangers would back me up on that.

Has there never been rain in the subway before?

Holy smokes this is a nightmare of a ride!  Rain and flooding all over the subway system is causing massive delays.

I’m on the 1 train right now, and it is totally screwed up.  We’ve literally stopped in the tunnels for 15 minutes TWICE already.  We got to the next stop (finally), doors opened.  People got on and off.  Then we pulled out of the station like normal, but nooooooo.  Just few hundred yards away, we stopped.  And there we sat for another 15 minutes.

The worst part was that the air system isn’t on so it is getting really stuffy.  As it is, all the windows are fogged up.  From the outside, it must look like we were all making out in here or something.  Gross!

So the South Ferry station is allegedly under water, which means that the 1 trains don’t have their normal area to turn around.  Then, in the 100’s some where, the uptown express trains are being rerouted because one of those stations is under water.

As great as the subway system is, it’s ability to adapt in adverse conditions is its biggest flaw.  Once a station’s tracks get wet, like South Ferry, there’s very little alternate solutions.  I’m sorry, but a free transfer to a shuttle bus at street level is not a valid alternative.  There needs to be more cross over points so that trains can get around a limited area and get back on track.

I just hope this get’s cleared up by tonight!

Don’t eat on the subway unless you bring some for everyone

food.jpg

Am I the only one that finds it really strange when people eat on the subway?  I cup of coffee or a soda is one thing.  That’s pretty common.  However, breaking out an entire meal from KFC is a little strange.

First, holy gross!  I don’t care if the food never comes in physical contact with a single thing on the subway.  Just the thought of my food coming in contact with the air on a subway train is a little nauseating.

Then, there’s the mess.  The train is bouncing all over, your drink is spilling, you’ve got BBQ sauce about to splatter all over the seat…c’mon.

Oh and what about the smell?  Most of the time, the food smells pretty good.  Unfortunately, after a stop or two, the smell of fried yum yums gets a little overwhelming.  Did you ever leave a bag of fast food in your car with a tiny bit left over inside?  Come back an hour later and your whole care smells like a grease pit.  The same thing happens on the subway…sort of.  The smell of the food mixes with the general subway odors to produce something that will linger with you for hours.  So the rest of us on the train don’t need to be exposed to that.

Generally, people are slobs, so you know the left over bags, paper, napkins, etc. are just going to get left on that train.

On the other hand, bring me a milkshake, and you can eat all you want!!

Ahh yes, get them started young

Yes, that’s right, that was a 2 year old you saw board the 7 train by himself.  He’s a busy man.  He’s got places to go, and other babies to see.  He doesn’t have time for his mom to get her act together.  No no, he’s going with or without her.

22 month old Stuart Tito hit the rails on his own one morning, leaving his mother standing on the platform.  Mom turned her back for a second to deal with her other kid when Stewie ran onto the 7 train alone…just as the doors closed.

Police were called and called ahead to the train dispatch.  Luckily, another passenger noticed the 3 foot tall straphanger riding alone, and got him off the train.

Now we have “Last Minute Arrival Guy Baby!”

Wonderful.
