Police to Fight Subway Perverts?

AMNY reports that the Manhattan borough president wants to have the police crack down on subway pervsattacking and harassing people in the subway.

Scott Stringer’s office asked commuters how often someone sexually attacked or harassed them in the subway, and found frightening results. More than 60 percent of those who responded to the online study said they were sexually harassed and 10 percent said they’d been sexually assaulted. (AMNY)

60% !??!  Are you kidding me?   More than half the riders of the subway have been sexually harassed in the subway?  That seems a bit too extreme.  Ok, so 98% have been harassed in general, but not sexually.

Rush hour was noted as the most dangerous time to get sexed up.  How is that?  One woman reported that a man began to masturbate across right in front of her.  I must be missing something.  Where are all these freaks at 5:30pm on a Tuesday?

I guess I can see how people can cop a feel while getting crammed into a subway car.  I mean, it is just close quarters.  Your entire body gets pressed up against the person in front of you, but I don’t think that counts as a sexual crime.  Pervs must be playing grab ass or something and blaming it on the congestion.

I guess I will have to do a better job protecting my sweet, sweet ass.

Odd Subway Sex Assault

Note to self ladies:  Don’t pass out drunk on the subway platform and expect not to be felt up.

Jasiri Walloe, 32, was arrested early Friday after the brazen assault, cops said.

Walloe found the victim passed out on a bench at 5 a.m. at the Brooklyn Bridge station, police said. He allegedly began kissing and fondling the intoxicated woman.

When a No. 6 train pulled in, Walloe scooped her up and carried her aboard. Walloe took her off the train at Spring Street, cops said.

Another rider grew suspicious and followed the two off the train. Walloe took the woman into a vestibule at 214 Mulberry St. where he removed her shorts and underwear, police said. He then fondled and molested her, waking her up, police said. Walloe allegedly began to bolt, but was caught a short distance away by police who had been called by the witness.

From the NYP

Yeeeeeeah…weird.  First of all, what the hell are you doing passed out at a subway stop at 5am?   What happened to your friends?  Your drunk ass totally got ditched.  It was probably to the point where no one wanted to deal with you sh*t anymore.  But I bet they didn’t think you were going to get raped.

How drunk do you have to be to not wake up while being carted off onto a subway train, then taken into a vestibule, stripped naked, and fondled?  By the way, what the hell is a subway vestibule?  Are there secret rooms or spaces I was unaware of?

I’m not saying she had it coming, but people need to stop being idiots.

That is a bold move

I’m not sure why this caught my attention this morning, but it did.

As my train just approached, I looked up at the front of the train as it went past me. The train operator and I almost made eye contact. Then I saw the frame around his windshield.

Someone had tagged (graffiti) the window frame with blue Sharpie marker. It was just around the left side of the window, probably within sight from inside the operators cab. That’s a bold move!

Imagine if someone walked up to your car at a red light and tagged their name on your hood. That’s what someone must have done to this train.

The only way someone could have done it is if the train was at platform level. If it was parked in the rail yard, there’s no way someone could have reached that high.

That means someone walked right up to the train operator, in full view, and tagged the train with blue marker.

Wow. I thought that only happened back in the 1970’s and 1980’s.

Live from the subway, back to you in studio…

UPDATE:

Ok, there seems to be some confusion about where the trains was tagged.  Here’s a little illustration I whipped up to demonstrate.

See something. Say something. Just don’t touch it!

backpack.jpgThe NYPD has been doing a sneaky sting operation lately in the subway. They leave a bag of goodies sitting by itself somewhere in the system, and wait for someone to pick it up. So a bag of electronics is left sitting near a bench or on a train seat. Somebody comes by and sees it assuming that it was forgotten. If they take the bait, they get arrested.

Aquarius Cheers saw a Verizon bag with things in it. He picked it up and walked onto the next train instead of turning it over to the police officer standing nearby. Because he did not turn the goods over, that’s a theft according to the police. Cheers was arrested, however the charges were dropped.

So what’s the point? Why would the NYPD want to crack down on people taking forgotten goods? Is there an epidemic of people leaving stuff and coming back only to find that it’s been taken?

No, it’s much deeper. The NYPD is banking on the fact that the “usual suspects” will take the bait. Picking up that lucky bag means that they have the right to arrest and search you. So, they are really hopping to catch larger felons, people carrying weapons, drugs, etc. It has very little to with the merchandise being taken in the first place.

Police Crack Down on New Rules Leads to Weapon Seizures

cop.jpg

Back in 2005, the MTA passed new regulation making it illegal to walk between train cars (using the end doors).  The new rule was created mainly out of safety concerns.  The MTA wanted to reduce the number of injuries and deaths resulting from people falling through to the tracks.

Recently, the transit cops have discovered a new love of this regulation.  Basically, if an MTA cop spots you walking between train cars, they have the right to stop you.  Usually, you’ll just get a ticket and be on your way.  However, because they have stopped you for an offense, they have cause to give you a quick frisk while they have you in custody.

As a result, the transit cops keep finding guns and knives!

NYPD transit police have seized 296 knives and 13 handguns in the subway this year, compared with 116 knives and eight guns during the same stretch last year.

Realizing this new search strategy, the police have targeted crime hotspots.  Areas of high crime on street level will now receive special attention under ground.  Cops crack down on subway offenses under these areas, and pull tons of weapons out of the area.

I Spy

Digital video cameras coming to a subway car near you.  Or maybe not.  Or yes.  But perhaps no.  Huh?

We still don’t think the MTA knows what they want to do yet, but they are starting to dip their toes in the water with this idea.

The MTA has asked some subway car manufacturers to investigate installing digital surveillance systems on all the subway cars.  Yes, that sound you hear is in fact the ACLU growling along with every other privacy advocate group in the Tri-state.

SAS thinks that SUBWAYblogger won’t be too “enamored with the idea,” but we actually don’t think it’s a big deal.  So you might get caught picking your nose on the train.  And you might get caught on tape when you’re working on your graffiti.  Also, that dream of having sex in an empty subway car probably wouldn’t happen…unless the camera thing is a turn on.

There’s some positives.  You might be self conscious about your odd behavior, but think about the criminals.  Next time you get your purse snatched, the thug might think twice if he thinks he could get caught on tape.

So I hate to sound like “the man,” but if you aren’t doing anything illegal, what do you have to worry about? Washington, DC is already doing it (see picture above).

Anyway, the whole idea will cost a shat load of money, so don’t hold your breath.
