Welcome back winter. It’ freezing cold all over again. And what the hell was that this afternoon? Was that a snow squal?

It is definately cold all over again. Stupidly, I did not wear an especially warm coat today. So, I like many other riders had a quickness in my step. The subway entrance was a warm oasis.

Smelly, but warm.

No “A” Train. Or maybe yes? Hmmm

For one reason or another, there is a problem on the A line this morning.  Trains are being rerouted all over the place.

At this point, all I know is that the A train I was hoping to get at Penn Station is supposed to not be here.  Ok fine.  So I head back down the stairs, walk all the way under, then back up to catch the C train instead.

What’s that across the way on the other platform??  Looks like an A train!!  But according to the lady yelling at me in the ceiling, there isn’t supposed to be an A train here.  Oh well, I’ll just wait for the “C.”

And wait….

and wait some more…

still waiting…

WTF?  Is that another A train?  Yes, yes it is.  There my dumb ass stands, still waiting on the C platform.

My fellow passengers are equally as pissed.

Semi-back on Track (no pun intended…ok maybe)

Well the system seems semi back to normal. There’s still a long wait between trains.

I got a text message from a friend on the Lexington line saying that the trains are coming in groups. 2 or 3 trains would come by back to back with virtually no wait. Then it would be forever until the next group would come.

I had to wait for the first train to go by. It was too full. The next one took forever to come. By then, the platform filled back up. Luckily, I was up to the front edge of the platform.

We just left an express station that was overflowing with people. Lot of riders are trying to make the transfer, but wind up stranded on the platform.

Looks like it might take 24 hours for everything to settle back down.

Has there never been rain in the subway before?

Holy smokes this is a nightmare of a ride!  Rain and flooding all over the subway system is causing massive delays.

I’m on the 1 train right now, and it is totally screwed up.  We’ve literally stopped in the tunnels for 15 minutes TWICE already.  We got to the next stop (finally), doors opened.  People got on and off.  Then we pulled out of the station like normal, but nooooooo.  Just few hundred yards away, we stopped.  And there we sat for another 15 minutes.

The worst part was that the air system isn’t on so it is getting really stuffy.  As it is, all the windows are fogged up.  From the outside, it must look like we were all making out in here or something.  Gross!

So the South Ferry station is allegedly under water, which means that the 1 trains don’t have their normal area to turn around.  Then, in the 100’s some where, the uptown express trains are being rerouted because one of those stations is under water.

As great as the subway system is, it’s ability to adapt in adverse conditions is its biggest flaw.  Once a station’s tracks get wet, like South Ferry, there’s very little alternate solutions.  I’m sorry, but a free transfer to a shuttle bus at street level is not a valid alternative.  There needs to be more cross over points so that trains can get around a limited area and get back on track.

I just hope this get’s cleared up by tonight!

Don’t eat on the subway unless you bring some for everyone

food.jpg

Am I the only one that finds it really strange when people eat on the subway?  I cup of coffee or a soda is one thing.  That’s pretty common.  However, breaking out an entire meal from KFC is a little strange.

First, holy gross!  I don’t care if the food never comes in physical contact with a single thing on the subway.  Just the thought of my food coming in contact with the air on a subway train is a little nauseating.

Then, there’s the mess.  The train is bouncing all over, your drink is spilling, you’ve got BBQ sauce about to splatter all over the seat…c’mon.

Oh and what about the smell?  Most of the time, the food smells pretty good.  Unfortunately, after a stop or two, the smell of fried yum yums gets a little overwhelming.  Did you ever leave a bag of fast food in your car with a tiny bit left over inside?  Come back an hour later and your whole care smells like a grease pit.  The same thing happens on the subway…sort of.  The smell of the food mixes with the general subway odors to produce something that will linger with you for hours.  So the rest of us on the train don’t need to be exposed to that.

Generally, people are slobs, so you know the left over bags, paper, napkins, etc. are just going to get left on that train.

On the other hand, bring me a milkshake, and you can eat all you want!!

Is this a stress test?

Did you ever ride a train where the overhead speakers hum nonstop? Sometimes a hum, a ring, a buzz, or a SIREN.

Sometimes you don’t even notice it at first. Then, a few stops later, you can’t figure out why your head feels like it is going to explode.

It’s almost a cruel form of torture. Most of the time, the hum is no big deal. Annoying, but nothing major. Othertimes, you feel like the MTA is trying to get covert secrets out of you.

Where’s my asprin?

Now that’s entertainment

Ok so tonight’s “Live from the Subway” post is only a pseudo “live” post.  I was inspired to post about this guy, but truly, only video would do it justice.  So instead of writing about him while I was at 42nd Street, I decided to search YouTube for a video of him.  It’s the kind of thing you just know will be on YouTube.

Anyway, I’ve seen this guy dozens of time, and…well…I thought it was time to give him a shout out.  No, your eyes don’t deceive you.  It really is that strange in person.
