A note to our readers

Dear SUBWAYblogger readers,

We’ve recently made some changes on the backend that will hopefully improve the performance of this site. Over the past couple weeks, there has been a noticeable increase in page load time. Basically, it was taking a lot longer than it should for the main page to load.

Mainly, this is due to the amazing growth in site traffic we have received. So that’s great!! Who knew that a blog like this could ever be popular? Anyway, increased site traffic has put some stress on the severs. To solve these problems, we’ve “lightened the load” by making the code more efficient. That’s geek talk for making stuff work faster.

We greatly appreciate all of the support we have received by our regular readers! In bound links, RSS hits, and reader submissions continue to grow month after month. At the end of the day, it’s just nice to know that there’s actually people out there enjoying what we put out.

Thanks again!!

Oooo Girrrrl…Gypsy Maps Bitch Slaps onNYTurf’s Map

gypsy.gif

So if you’ve checked out GypsyMaps, you might have found yourself asking, “Did onNYTurf go girly?”  Nope, it isn’t the same site.

Gypsymapsis a pretty blatant copy of the onNYTurfsubway map/Google Map mashup.

Unfortunately, I think Gypsy may end up on top in this one, and that’s just because it is more corporate looking.  The site’s reponse time is a little better, the site is a little more modern, and there’s clearly new products in development.  Gypsy says that they will also release a bus version very shortly.

However, SUBWAYblogger has a softspot for the onNYTurf maps.  They are more grassroots.  It’s a noncommercial effort of real people just looking to provide New Yorkers a great free service.  So, I think they deserve all the credit. Unfortunately, a more commercial company might monetize it much better.

Anyway, check them both out and see what you like.  If you don’t have a preference, then just stick with the good guys at onNYTurf.

Random Stabbing on J Train in Brooklyn

stabbing.jpgFollowing up on what we posted earlier, there was a stabbing on the J train in Brooklyn. However, the victim is 17 years old, not 15 as we previously had heard.

At this point, there isn’t much else that is known. Police say they may have a suspect in custody.

The weapon was a scary looking filet knife, about 8 inches long and curved.

The kid that was stabbed is in critical condition.

How he got stabbed is anyone’s guess at this time. The police aren’t really letting much information out, so that’s it for now!

Back To Business for 2007

Ahh the first post of the new year.  A fresh slate.  A new beginning.  Back to work…damn.

SUBWAYblogger reader:

“Dude, I thought you wrote this thing from the subway.  What’s the deal lately?”

Yeah, sorry about that.  Hey, it was the holidays and vacation time.  Basically, SUBWAYblogger took a long awaited break from the daily grind.  So, the subway was not ridden much last week, thus no posts live from the subway.

However, SUBWAYblogger will get its butt back in gear starting Tuesday Morning (Jan 2).

In the mean time, we’ve focused on some feature pieces, which have gotten some attention in the blogosphere.  Since they seem to be so popular, we will probably do a little more of that sort of thing, and see how it goes.  Don’t worry though, it won’t come at the sacrifice of your twice daily live postings.

Ho ho ho over

Well, we survived the holidays. SUBWAYblogger will return to normal schedule in a day or two. We are still out of town. Yeah, it is really strange to spend this much time in the burbs.

Anyway, it’s back to the city REALLY soon. We can’t wait!

Thanks for hanging tight.

Guy in wheelchair calls 911 to get out of subway

elevator.jpgMichael Harris, and his motorized wheelchair, got off the 5 train in Brooklyn last week only to find that the elevator to street level was out of service. First of all, big freakin’ surprise. Anyway, he went to the station agent to told him to get back on a train and go back three stops. From there, he should have been able to find another station with a working elevator.

Harris got so pissed that he instead called 911. Firefighters showed up to carry him and his wheelchair to street level. First, they strapped him to the stretcher, and carried him up. He got a little dramatic with his description saying that they strapped him to gurney that “they use to carry out dead bodies.” A bit much we think.

They then went down to lug up his 300 pound wheelchair.

Mixed feelings about this story. Did this guy take it a little too far?

After all, it is no secret that the subway system is not at all handicap accessible. Only 23 stops in Manhattan have ramps and elevators. The whole system only has about 50 of the 400+ stops that have been converted.

Here’s a stat for you: There were over 1,000 service outages per year reporter for the 23 elevators in Manhattan from 2002 to 2005. Holy crap! Did they ever work?

Apparently the problem is that the homeless and drunks use them as toilets. And they tend to get vandalized a lot.

Here’s a solution. Install MetroCard swipes at all the elevators so that only the elderly and handicap can use them. That’s fair, right? If for some reason you have a temporary need to use them, go to the token booth agent and get a temporary card to swipe. That way, the bums and drunks can’t get on the elevators. Maybe then they will last longer.

Otherwise, the handicap get a special fare, and all the busses are handicap accessible. So don’t complain too much. You might have a case sometimes, but don’t push your luck.

Nice, comfortable wheelchair gloves can be very important for those who use them.
