Too easy

Ok folks, walked right down to the subway and a train was waiting for me. Plenty of room too! The way this week has gone, it feels too good to be true.

Of course, I am going out later tonight, so something will go wrong then.

The past two weeks of transit nightmares have turned me into quite the pessimist. I have had the worst luck.

Has anyone else had as shitty of a transit week as I have?
Here’s looking forward to a better run next week!

Mmmmm tastes like Friday

Friday is the best day of the week. Period. The subway is always less crowded. People are more relaxed. There’s more of a casual feel when people exit and enter the train, and people are generally less pissy.

Plus there’s the added bonus that it is in fact the last day of the work week.

I think many people just go straight out after work. How they get to wherever they go after work is a mystery though. The subway is typically less crowded after work on a Friday. Maybe it is because people start leaving the office earlier, so the load is more balanced. Who knows.

So as long as we can keep the crazies off the tracks, today should turn out to be a great transit day. Of course, with my luck, there will be a power failure at my stop!

Wait a minute…it’s Veteran’s Day isn’t it?  Well…there’s the answer.

Not looking forward to the holiday rush

redcups.jpg

As I stand in this already over crowded subway car, I can’t help but dread the coming holiday rush. Starbucks has already rolled out the red coffee cups! So you know that means it is downhill from here.

Soon, the out of town shoppers will be here. They will start to invade the transit system. Just being there isn’t really the problem. I think most of us can handle the crowds. Instead, the problem is their complete lack of direction.

The out of town shoppers don’t normally ride the subway so they have no idea where to go. They can’t tell uptown from downtown…an express from a local. It is a nightmare all because they stop right in the middle of everything to figure out where they are going. They don’t know to squish together when the train is crowded. They walk 4 people wide down the halls at very slow paces.

All together it slows the entire system down. That is why I call on YOU to inform these people. Help tell them where to go so we can get things moving! Otherwise, we will all suffer.

Police seem to shut down stops more often

It seems lately that there have been more “because of a police investigation” announcements being made over the PA speakers lately. Everyday, there’s another station that is closed because od police activity. Sometimes, that ends up shutting down entire lines!

I’m all for being safe in the subway, but I hope the MTA police are actually doing something instead of just closing stations every time there is a suspicious situation.

The reason I question the activities of late are because there hasn’t been much attention in the press. Usually when the police make a big bust, they run for the cameras to talk about it. If there were a big police success, they would would want everyone to know about it.

Lately, the only police activity that is heard about outside the subway PA’s happens when the police are cleaning someones splattered ass of the tracks.

L Train Slashing; Man Loses Pinky

finger.jpg

In continuing coverage of the freaky crap happening in the subway lately, last night around 2am, a guy got slashed on the L train.

Apparently, some jackass guy with a beard started to taunt another rider.  “You lookin’ at me?”  Then the two got into it.   The poor 19 year old guy was just trying to mind his own business.

The attacker pulled a knife and cut off the kid’s pinky finger!  The kid also got slashed in the face and chest.  The hospital attempted to reattach the finger.

If I had to guess, it sounds like a crazy homeless guy.  I have been accosted by random crazy, smelly guys in the past.  The best thing is to ignore them usually.  In this case, it seems that wasn’t gonna “cut it”…excuse the cheap pun.

Subway pulls away with DOORS OPEN!

Subway Conductor

Holy crap, can you even think of anything more freaky on the train than that?  SUBWAYblogger would probably need a change of pants.

A Manhattan bound A train left the Grant Ave station with some of its doors open.  It gets so much crazier…

Ok, so some of the doors on the train were stuck open, and the conductor couldn’t get them to close.  So, he left his little control booth and started walking from car to car to see if he could see what was keeping the doors open.  All of a sudden, the train started to move!  Eventually, he intercomed up to the motorman, and the train stopped immediately.

Apparently, the little “Doors Closed” light illuminated on the motorman’s control board, so he thought it was ok to pull away.  That’s normally what happens when conductor closes the doors.  A little light goes on in the front of the train telling the motorman that it is clear to pull away. In this case, the conductor was still walking from car to car, and the doors obviously weren’t closed.

Note to self, no more leaning on the doors.

Election Day is a holiday

vote.jpg

Yesterday when I made my prediction that the transit system might be a little screwy, I forgot that today is also a holiday.

Many schools and federal offices are closed on Election Day. So there’s waaaaaaay less people trying to get around today. So this morning’s anticipation of an insane commute was met by pleasant calmness in the subway system. Hell, I even got a seat!

So yay for Election Day.

Now, if we can manage to keep the crazies off the tracks, it will be an all around great day.

Don’t forget to vote early and often! And remember, CHANGE is good.

Death on tracks confirmed

1 train

This morning’s disaster with 1, 2, 3 plus 5, 6 service was due to a person getting struck by a train. However, it has not been confirmed as a suicide.

Usually, if someone was pushed, or if it was an accident, you would hear about it right away. Especially if they were pushed because police would want to begin the man hunt.

Tonight’s ride seems to be especially calm. There’s plenty of room on my train. So hopefully, Election Day will be a little more relaxed. But I doubt it.

Many people leave for work early so that they can go vote. So this may end up messing up the normal morning traffic flow.

As for the evening, even more people go to vote after work. Especially with the polls in NYC being open until 9pm. So the afternoon commute could get ugly, although I would suspect mustly for the buses.

Most NYC polling places are right in your neighborhood. So a couple block bus ride might be better than the subway.

Anway, we shall see. SUBWAYblogger is leaving early just in case.

More service delays

What a joy. 1, 2, 3 and the 5, 6 trains…good luck this morning.

There’s no downtown service on those lines this morning. By the looks of things, uptown service might be out of luck too.

“Police activity” at Columbus Circle has apparently shut down the works.

Rumor has it that the police activity is due to yet another jumper. I’m sorry, but SUBWAYblogger has little sympathy for anyone who commits suicide in a manner which impacts complete strangers.

Please note, we do not have confirmation at this point of a suicide or even a body on the tracks. At this point, we are just going on what other sources in the area tell SUBWAYblogger.

In any event, I had to make a trek over to a completely different subway line today. So did thousands of other people. One train line with 2 lines worth of riders all trying to get on at the same time. Yippee.

In all the confusion, somehow I managed to get a seat though. Go figure. It was complete luck.

So, we are 0 for 1 so far this week. Nice start MTA.
